VAMFR 001 | Introducing the Voice Acting Mastery Field Report and Correspondents

Welcome to episode 1 of the Voice Acting Mastery: Field Report podcast!

Greetings everyone! As promised, Voice Acting Mastery is continuing to evolve and expand to serve the needs of our listeners and students. As part of that expansion, I’m proud and honored to present the first episode of our brand new sister podcast, the Voice Acting Mastery Field Report!

All of us at Voice Acting Mastery have been working hard for quite some time behind the scenes to put together this exciting new show for you. It’s our goal to help you gain an even greater perspective on the world of voice over by sending real, working voice actors into the field to conduct interviews and share stories about what’s currently happening in the industry. If you’re already a Voice Acting Mastery fan, you know that I’ve done my personal best to share my own experiences and expertise on the subject and to provide the best road map I could to help my listeners and students succeed as voice actors. However, I’ve always known that my perspective was only one among many, so over the years I’ve also turned to trusted colleagues and industry experts to bring added wisdom and experience. It’s vitally important to me that my listeners have access to as many relevant viewpoints and up-to-date stories as possible, because the voice over world keeps changing as new technology, new markets and new media enter the scene. I’ve been looking forward to expanding the Voice Acting Mastery family and bringing in talented, enthusiastic voice acting professionals to help our listeners understand the current state of the industry, and how best to approach building a successful career in today’s environment.

In this, our pilot episode, you’ll be meeting our three VAM Field Report correspondents, Ashley Huyge, Tom Bauer and DanWill “DW” McCann. I felt it would be helpful for you to get a sense of who they are, to hear about their voice acting backgrounds, and especially to become familiar with how they sound! You’ll be spending time with them often in the future, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy getting to know them and hearing their unique perspectives on the voice over world. They were all gracious enough to sit down with me and give me some insight not only into their own personal journeys as voice actors, but also to share a little bit about some topics they’re planning on covering in future episodes of the Field Report. I decided to include all of their stories in this first episode so as not to break up the flow of the group interview, so I hope you’ll enjoy this bonus-length episode. I’m eager to share these vibrant and talented individuals with all our listeners.

The VAM Field Report will be released on the 1st Wednesday of every month so stay on the look out for it!

I was listening to the podcast on my way to school and I nearly freaked out on the bus when Tom said that he was the voice for Crush in Turtle Talk With Crush because I’ve been to that show several times. Now I will want to go when I go on the 18th of this month.

  2. wow just when i had the idea you could not get any cooler. so does this mean voice acting mastery will be discontinued? you are giving me a run for my money it just keeps getting harder and harder to surpass you but will be fun all the same. All the best in you on your voice acting journey.PS Not trying to be mean i am trying to surpass you to keep me going so a don’t get off my own path i’m not trying to be rude

    • Crispin Freeman says:

As I mentioned in the opening of the Field Report, the normal Voice Acting Mastery podcast is not being discontinued. Both podcasts will be running for the foreseeable future.

  3. Eric Rivera says:

How exciting. A new way to stay current on the voice acting world. Can’t wait to see what else is coming up.

Thank you all for your time and wisdom.

  4. Heather N says:

I am SO looking forward to this series! Your podcasts have been a significant resource for me and I truly want to pass along my appreciation for all the work you put into them. Paying it forward to us…thank you!

  5. Michael Schlotthauer says:

It was very cool to hear each of their stories!

  6. The first steps in an exciting journey!

  7. Krizia says:

I love this so very much along with your original podcast!

If I may make a suggestion/constructive criticism: Tom is wonderful but his use of “um” “uh” and “you know” is distracting and pulls focus away from what he is really saying. No need for fillers from this talented guy!

Thank you for putting this together and am looking forward to hearing more from this panel.

    🙂

Thank you for the feedback! Chalk it up to first-time nerves and me being no good at talking about myself, haha. Sorry about that! It will definitely be a one time thing.

  8. Kalyn McCabe says:

I’m so excited for this expedition~! Welcome to the family, lovely reporters. I wish you the best.

Can’t wait for the next one!

  9. This is fantastic! While listening to their personal stories, it’s encouraging to hear how they’ve all found such great success from their different walks of life. I’m looking forward to the upcoming episodes!

  10. Bertrand says:

More VAM, hurray! I can’t wait to hear Ashley, Tom and DW’s reports.

I just have 2 incredibly minor criticisms to make if you’ll allow me:
    1. The background music in the intro is a bit too loud. It tends to drown out your voice I felt.
    2. For some reason VAMFR001 doesn’t show up in my RSS feed even though every other blog post so far has appeared. I have no idea whether it’s on your end or mine though.

I look forward to the next VAM and VAMFR episodes… And your Mythology & Meaning podcast as well, whenever that comes out!

    • Crispin Freeman says:

Hi there Bertrand. Thanks for your comments.

      1. I agree with your assessment about the intro music. I didn’t have time to check it on multiple sources (I was working under a pretty tight deadline), but the music did need to be lowered. I have since updated the mp3 file with a slightly different mix. I’d love to hear what you think of this new file. You can download the new file from the same link.

      2. The reason it is not showing up in your RSS feed is that the Field Report has its own feed separate from the main podcast. I want people to be able to subscribe to each podcast individually if they’d like. I’ll be submitting the Field Report to iTunes sometime next month. In the meantime, here are the new feeds:
      Main Podcast: http://www.voiceactingmastery.com/feed/podcast
      Field Report: http://www.voiceactingmastery.com/feed/field-report

Hope that helps! Thanks for helping me troubleshoot things! I appreciate it!

      • Bertrand says:

Hi Crispin, thank you for taking my comments to heart.

        1. I don’t have access to headphones right now, but the sound balance is indeed much better now, thanks! Part of the problem stemmed from, I think, the fact that the intro music for VAMFR is much more energetic than the music for VAM, with higher highs. It pierces through your narration more easily, but it suits the tone of the podcast well. I don’t know if you changed anything else, but I didn’t have any problem with the rest of the episode.

        2. Makes sense! I figured as much, but I couldn’t find the link to the dedicated feed when I looked – still can’t find it, actually, but I may be looking in the wrong place. I can only find the general feed under “follow me” at the top of the page. And since I don’t really use iTunes… Thanks for giving me the link directly. Everything’s in order now. More VAM feeds is never a bad thing.

Best of luck to the whole team!

        • Crispin Freeman says:

          1. I just adjusted the level of the background music when it occurs in the episode. I’m glad you think it sounds better now. Thanks for giving such useful feedback!

          2. I need to add the second RSS feed on the sidebar of the website. I’ve had other priorities taking precedence in recent days. I’m planning on submitting the show to iTunes once we have the second episode in the feed and I’ll probably make sure those separate RSS links are available then. You get to be on the leading edge with early access to that feed URL!

          Take care!

  11. Thurston says:

Will this be occupying its own separate RSS feed in the future? I usually get new podcasts straight through iTunes and only just now realized that there was a new series.

  12. Flor says:

What an awesome new endeavor! I love the idea of getting to hear from people who are closer to the beginning of their careers as well as from you, Crispin, and your interview subjects in the main podcast.

And superdoubleespecially love it because I get to listen to friends I’ve made in various voice over classes and meetups around town! Congratulations once again to DW, Tom and Ashley!

Are there going to be any other episodes where you, Crispin, ask the three field reporters for insights on how they’ve proceeded in their careers? For example, comparing and contrasting methods of locating work, connecting with agents and or casting directors, business pitfalls and perhaps companies or classes that were a let down, time management, budgeting, using and acquiring tech for a home studio, etc. I would love to hear how they are going about it, especially since multiple voices will perfectly illustrate the multiple ways to go about this freelance industry!

Thanks once again, can’t wait to hear more!

    Flor

    • Crispin Freeman says:

I’m glad you’re excited about the Field Report! There are sure to be some interesting topics coming down the pike!

Your suggestion about asking the correspondents about their careers is a good one! I will definitely see how we can work that into the Field Report!

      Thanks!
